Title IX states that "no person in the United States shall on the basis of sex be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving federal financial assistance."
Sex discrimination includes a variety of behaviors which can limit or negatively impact educational opportunity. These behaviors include: sexual harassment, sexual assault, sexual misconduct, stalking, relationship violence (ex. dating and domestic violence), pregnancy and parenting, gender identity and sexual orientation discrimination.
The law forbids sex discrimination in all university student services and academic programs including, but not limited to, admissions, financial aid, academic advising, residential life, athletics, discipline, recreational services, health, wellness and support services, academic assignments and grading. Title IX also forbids sex discrimination in university employment and recruitment consideration or selection.
The Office for Civil Rights (OCR) in the U.S. Department of Education is responsible for enforcing Title IX. OCR engages in compliance enforcement to ensure that institutions which receive certain federal funds comply with Title IX.
Nondiscrimination Statement
The University is required to include a statement of nondiscriminatory policy in any bulletins, announcements, publications, catalogs, application forms, or other recruitment materials that are made available to participants, students, applicants, or employees. Athletics
Students are provided with equitable opportunities to participate in sports; equitable and proportional scholarship provision; and substantial similarity in the provision of benefits, services and facilities.
The Office of Institutional Equity serves in a role of primary Title IX administration, accepts complaints, oversees the Interim Procedures and provides interim actions and supportive measures.
